Tough to say what the big one for the week is going to be. I think the top contender -- though not necessarily by a wide margin -- is "Zombieland," a comedy-horror flick starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin. As a zombie apocalypse sweeps across the world, the foursome set out on a cross-country trip to... well I'm not entirely sure. They kill lots of zombies though.

The other top contender for (non-family) picks is Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, "Whip It." Adapted from the Shauna Cross novel "Derby Girl," "Whip It" follows a Texas beauty queen (Ellen Page) who, in an act of rebellion, joins a local roller derby league. It may not be a terribly original story, but "Whip It" boasts a cast that includes strong female presences like Page, Barrymore, Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Juliette Lewis and Zoe Bell.

Those who prefer their comedy straight -- as opposed to having it tinged with horror or family drama -- need look no further that the Ricky Gervais-directed-and-starring "The Invention of Lying." Imagine a world in which no one ever figured out how to lie. Then one day, some random guy has the brilliant idea to fudge the facts a little. Awesome idea... plus, I hear it's pretty great.

Of course, if you've got kids, younger siblings or a hankering to see cool crap popping off the screen, this week is your chance to catch the tiny release window for Disney's new 3-D-ified "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2," which screen in a double feature. With "Toy Story 3" out next summer, this is a great way to catch up on the antics of Woody, Buzz and the rest of the gang.

Things are just as tantalizing on the limited release front. As we learned this morning, Friday brings with it a wider opening for "Paranormal Activity." There's also the new Coen brothers flick "A Serious Man," which MTV's Josh Horowitz very much enjoyed. Also: Michael Moore's new flick, "Capitalism: A Love Story"; John Keats-focused period drama "Bright Star" (directed by Jane Campion); sports doc "More Than A Game"; and the Clive Owen-starring family drama "The Boys Are Back." What's on tap for you?

“I’m going to Iowa to film a movie called ‘Janie Jones,’” the 13-year-old cutie told us this week, revealing the name of the top-secret project which she recently became the first major star to join.

“I can’t say too much about it, but it is a drama,” Breslin said of the film’s tone, claiming that it will be quite a departure from her past roles. “It has some funny parts in it, but for the most part it’s drama.”

The project is not to be confused with “Untitled Jamie Lee Jones Project,” an in-development film about a contract worker in Iraq who claimed to have been raped by six employees of a Halliburton subsidiary. “Janie Jones” will star Breslin as a fictional teenage main character, and it has nothing to do with Iraq or Halliburton.

“Yes, I am [Janie Jones],” the former Oscar nominee explained, saying that she’s playing the title role. “And it’s fiction.”

Although little is known about the flick, it’s sure to have a great title track if it wants one. Fans of The Clash will remember “Janie Jones,” the now classic punk song about a man who loves everything... except his job. Whether Breslin will be serenaded to the strains of Joe Strummer is anyone's guess, though it's unlikely that she's actually portraying the infamous British madam/pop singer the song is named for.

As for the rest of the cast: “I don’t know if I can say,” Breslin added. Stay tuned, as we’ll have more on "Janie Jones" in the weeks to come.

-- "School of Rock" writer Mike White sold the script for his "Babe in the Woods," an action-comedy in which a new student at Yale University somehow becomes the target of the New Jersey mob. I envision this as a cross between "PCU" and "The Sopranos." (Variety)

-- The announcement that Steven Spielberg's next project would be an adaptation of the Jimmy Stewart classic "Harvey" led many to speculate that Spielberg pal Tom Hanks would step into -- or at least be approached for -- the Stewart role. Fox hasn't exactly put those possibilities to rest, but they did issue a statement saying that the actor "has not read the script and speculation about him and this project has been inaccurate." -- Thomas Pynchon's new novel (or novella, as it is apparently being referred to), "Inherent Vice," is being shopped around for a big screen treatment by Creative Artists Agency. -- Rumor has it that "Ninja Assassin" star Rain is being eyed by Warner Bros. for a remake of the Bruce Lee classic, "Enter the Dragon." I'm usually not big on running rumors, but this one comes from Latino Review and those guys have a pretty solid track record. For now, I remain hopeful. (Latino Review)

-- In the world of TV remakes-as-feature films, it looks like "Gunsmoke" is our next contender to enter the ring. CBS Films nabbed Gregory Poirier ("National Treasure: Book of Secrets") to write a script and Craig Baumgarten ("Shattered Glass") to produce. The only question I have: why "Gunsmoke"? Zombie comedy, much better formula. Granted, the dead humans walking in Ruben Fleischer’s “Zombieland” are the better, stronger, faster variety featured in more modern takes on the genre. Still, I’m looking forward to seeing how stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg (”Adventureland“), Emma Stone (”Superbad“) and Abigail Breslin (”Little Miss Sunshine“) deal with the hordes as they make their way across the country.
