Leslie Mann is as known for her roles in comedies like “Big Daddy,” “The 40 Year Old Virgin” and “Knocked Up.” She is also the wife of Judd Apatow and mother to their children, which probably helped her land roles in those latter two. It seems appropriate then that she’s starring in the upcoming family-friendly flick “Shorts,” for which a hot new trailer was recently unveiled. In the movie, she plays a soccer mom whose life is turned upside down by a magic rainbow rock, “Alice and Wonderland”-style.
“It’s a series of short films,” Mann explained. “It’s about a kid who finds a magic rock. And whoever is holding this rock, whatever they wish for, it will come true.”
Directed by “Spy Kids” mastermind Robert Rodriguez, and co-starring such notables as William H. Macy, James Spader and Kat Dennings, “Shorts” tells the story of a suburban neighborhood transformed into a magical jungle full of mini-spaceships, wild animals and giant boogers. Although the trailer makes it look like a kid’s film, that stuff is nothing compared to what happens once the adults get their hands on the magical rainbow rock.
“Well, we find the rock and I wish that my husband and I can be closer,” Mann said, laughing. “And then we become one.”
And she’s not just using the cliché “we become one” to describe the relationship between her and her hubby, played by Jon Cryer. The two quite literally fuse together, “All of Me”-style. “It’s just like his top half and my bottom. It’s half of his leg, and half of my leg — and Robert Rodriguez, with his magical powers, made it look like one person. It’s cool!”
“Jon Cryer is my other half,” Mann said. “It’s pretty cool.”
The family comedy hits the big screen on August 21st and Rodriguez will be at Comic-Con later this month to present footage from it. “It’s ridiculous what he does. He does everything — the music, directing, the lighting, he does everything,” Mann marveled. “It’s a great kid’s movie, and I love it too.”
